“Should we switch to paper bags?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And if you’ve researched the topic, you might have come away more confused than when you started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some studies say paper bags are worse for the climate. Others say they’re better. The truth is, neither answer is wrong\u2014but neither tells the whole story either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This article breaks down the life cycle data, examines the trade-offs, and offers practical guidance for companies making the switch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Life cycle assessments (LCAs) are the gold standard for measuring environmental impact. They look at everything from raw material extraction to manufacturing, transport, use, and disposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When you apply that lens to paper vs. plastic bags, the results are surprisingly nuanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The headline figure often cited is that paper bag production requires about twice the energy and five times the water of plastic production, while emitting roughly three times the greenhouse gases during manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A 2020 study in the Journal of Cleaner Production<\/em> even found the energy gap could be four times or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those numbers sound concerning. But they do not show that the paper industry has been improving its environmental performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A study commissioned by EUROSAC and CEPI Eurokraft found that the CO\u2082 footprint of paper sacks dropped by 28% between 2007 and 2021\u2014from 118 grams to 86 grams per bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That improvement came largely from cleaner electricity and more efficient mill operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The gap is closing. And it’s closing fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On a per-use basis, if you’re only looking at climate impact, a conventional plastic bag has a lighter footprint than a paper bag\u2014provided it is used only once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That’s because plastic is lightweight and efficient to produce and transport. Paper bags are about seven times heavier, which means more fuel is burned per truckload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But that single-use assumption is a big “if.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n The UK Environment Agency’s 2011 study concluded that a paper bag needs to be reused three times to break even with a single-use plastic bag in terms of global warming potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The British Plastics Federation suggests four times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The point is: reuse changes everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If your customers throw away the bag after one trip, paper may not be the greener choice. But if they keep it in the car or reuse it for groceries multiple times, the calculation changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At the end of its life, paper is in a different league.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It biodegrades, it composts, and it recycles well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Plastic, on the other hand, can remain in the environment for centuries.
